Belarus' regional business initiatives to get assistance under EU/UNDP project

MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – On 10 December, Minsk played host to a ceremony to present certificates to winners of the contest of initiatives aimed at developing infrastructure to promote entrepreneurship. Financing for each project will total $110,000 on average, BelTA has learned.

The implementation of the winning projects will help promote business in a particular area. For example, business incubators will be opened in Zhlobin and Lida. An agro-ecoentreprenerhsip promotion center will be set up in the Sporovsky Biological Reserve in Bereza District. Plans are in place to develop high-technology business in Bykhov District. SME support centers, including those for young people, will be launched in Orsha and Kobrin.

UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Alexandra Solovieva praised a new stage in the development of entrepreneurship in the country. “We are talking not only about projects that will bring profit, create new jobs and points of growth in the region. We are also talking about business which focuses on solving social and environmental problems, women's entrepreneurship, engagement of people with disabilities,” she said.

Applications for the contest were open from 20 August to 30 September as part of the project Support to Local Development in the Republic of Belarus, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the Belarusian Economy Ministry. The contest commission considered 76 initiatives.

The project was registered by the Economy Ministry in January 2019. The term of implementation is 36 months: from 1 February 2019 to 31 January 2022. It is aimed at supporting various forms of economic initiative, competitiveness and innovation activities for inclusive development at the local level.
