Belarus beat Austria at IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship

MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – Belarus defeated Austria 4-3 (2-3, 1-0, 1-0) on the first day of the 2019 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division I in Minsk on 9 December, BelTA has learned.

The Austrians were off to a good start as they attacked aggressively and were faster than their rivals. Austria's Valentin Ploner broke the ice with a goal at 04:55 taking advantage of a mistake made by the hosting team.

After that Team Belarus stepped up the game making the Austrians nervous. Vitali Pinchuk scored for Belarus at 06:42. Soon afterwards Benjamin Baumgartner took Team Austria ahead. The Belarusians responded when Ilya Usov scored for Belarus at 17:59. However, it took Team Austria less then a minute to get the lead after Paul Huber scored making it 3-2 for Austria.

In the second period Andrei Pavlenko scored for Belarus at 30:29, which significantly boosted morale of Team Belarus.

Alexei Protas scored again making the final score 4 -3 for Belarus.

On 12 December Team Belarus will face Team Norway, on 13 December they will play against Team Slovenia, on 15 December they will take on Team Denmark.
